This is a blessing which I originally wrote while working at the Leo Baeck Education Center, Haifa, for the International Human Rights Day, December 10, 2012. It is based on the 4th of the Seven Blessings in the Jewish wedding ceremony, with additional quotes from our tradition. This blessing is included in Tfilat HaAdam prayer book, 2021.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה
ה׳ אֱלֹהֵינוּ
מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,
אֲשֶׁר יָצַר אֶת הָאָדָם בְּצַלְמוֹ,
בְּצֶלֶם דְּמוּת תַּבְנִיתוֹ,
זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה בְּרָאָם
וַיְבָרֶךְ אֹתָם
וַיִּקְרָא אֶת שְׁמָם אָדָם.
לְלַמְּדֵנו שֶׁכׇּל נֶפֶשׁ
הִיא כְּעוֹלָם מָלֵא
וְכׇל נְשָׁמָה הִיא נֵר אֶלֹהִי,
מָקוֹר אֶחָד לְכֻלָּנוּ,
אֵל אֶחָד בְּרָאָנוּ,
אֵין פַּרְצוּפֵינוּ דּוֹמִים זֶה לָזֶה
וְאֵין דֵּעוֹתֵינוּ דּוֹמוֹת זֶוֹ לָזֶוֹ,
וְכׇל אַחַת וְאֶחָד נִבְרְאוּ בְּחוֹתָמוֹ.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה׳, יוֹצֵר הָאָדָם:

Blessed are you,
Adonai our God,
Sovereign of the universe,
who created Humanity in God’s image,
[in the image of the likeness of God’s pattern]
male and female God created them,
blessed them
and called them Adam,
so we may learn that each soul
in an entire world,
each spirit is a divine candle,
we all come from one source,
the One God created us all,
our faces are different
and our thoughts are different,
yet each of us are stamped with God’s seal.
Blessed are you, Adonai, creator of Humanity.

Oded Mazor

Rabbi Oded Mazor, born and raised in Israel, received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Jewish Philosophy in the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and rabbinic ordination from the Israeli program of HUC-JIR. Oded co-edited the Israeli Reform Three Regalim (Pilgrim Holy Days) prayer book, HaSimcha Sh'Balev, and is part of the editorial committee of Tfilat HaAdam. After nearly a decade as rabbi and educator in the Leo Baeck Education Center, Haifa, and living in the renewed Kibbutz Ḥannaton, Oded and the family are back in Jerusalem, where he serves as the rabbi of Ḳehilat Ḳol HaNeshama.
